Coconut chutney is an essential side dish served as a dip with South Indian tiffin breakfast like Idli, Dosa, and Medu Vada.
It is basically a condiment or a dip made by finely grinding fresh white coconut meat with some herbs and spices. Coconut chutney is also called Nariyal ki chatni or Nariyal chutney in the Hindi language.
This Idli Chutney or Dosa Chutney Recipe is Tamil Nadu Style and includes coconut, roasted chana dal, herbs, and spices.
If you do not have roasted chana dal, then you can fry chana dal in a bit of oil until golden and then use.
Chana dal is husked small black chickpeas. They are also known as Bengal gram in English. In this coconut chutney recipe, you can use desiccated coconut (unsweetened).
Simply blend the desiccated coconut in warm water. Frozen coconut also works well. When blending frozen coconut, use warm water, so that the coconut fat does not separate.
